Ongoing paediatric occupational therapy typically involves continuous assessment and regular intervention to support a child’s growth and development of their occupational skills.

Motor Skills Development

  • Fine Motor Skills: These include skills required for hand-eye coordination, handwriting, buttoning clothes, using utensils, and manipulating small objects.
  • Gross Motor Skills: This refers to larger movements, such as walking, running, climbing, and balancing as well as strengthening core muscles, coordination, and posture.

Sensory Processing

  • Many children have sensory processing difficulties, where they may overreact or underreact to certain sensory stimuli (e.g., lights, sounds, textures). Ongoing Occupational Therapy helps children learn how to manage sensory overload or how to seek out appropriate sensory input to stay regulated and focused.

Self Care and Daily Living Skills

  • Ongoing therapy supports children in developing basic self-care skills like dressing, grooming, eating, and toileting. For children with physical, developmental, or cognitive challenges, occupational therapy focuses on improving independence and safety in these areas, using adaptive tools or teaching new strategies.

Executive Functioning and Social Skills

  • Executive Functioning: Occupational Therapy can target a child's ability to focus, process information, and solve problems. Children may experience difficulties with memory, initiation and completion of tasks as well as the planning and organisation of these tasks, to allow for these tasks to be completed successfully.
  • Social Skills: Children may struggle with social interactions, including taking turns, understanding social cues, or expressing emotions appropriately. Through therapy, we can support with the development and growth of social skills to improve ability for your child to confidently communicate and collaborate with peers across different environments, and social demands.

School and Play Skills

  • Therapy works to ensure that children can successfully engage in classroom activities and recreational play. This could involve teaching children how to focus on tasks, improve their writing, participate in group activities, or adapt their environment to allow for better access to learning or play opportunities.

We offer a range of assessment and reporting services designed to provide valuable insights into your child’s strengths and challenges. Whether you’re seeking a deeper understanding of their development or require support for further investigation and diagnosis, our tailored assessments can help guide the next steps in their journey.

  • The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales | Third Edition (Vineland-3)
  • Sensory Profile™ 2
  • Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting, Second Edition (DASH 2)
  • Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)
  • Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition (SRS-2)
  • Paediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (Pedi-Cat)
  • Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, Fourth Edition (DIAL-4)

Our Prep-Readiness Screener is an assessment used to identify strengths and challenges within your child's daily activities that are essential to the engagement and participation within prep and school environments. It will assist in the identification and recommendation of any specific areas that may need support and development to ensure that you child achieves the utmost success within their foundation year of Prep. The assessment serves as an initial evaluation to assess a child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social readiness for school engagement and participation, with the completion of a report to summarise outcome as well as any recommendation for ongoing support and development.

For children with specific needs, occupational therapists may recommend or help implement assistive devices like adapted writing tools, communication aids, or mobility devices. These tools empower children to participate in everyday tasks more easily and independently.

Ongoing occupational therapy often includes working closely with families and caregivers, providing strategies and training on how to support a child at home and in other settings. This collaborative approach ensures that therapy is integrated into a child’s daily life and promotes consistency in their progress. As a result, we are able to create handouts and educational resources to support ongoing intervention outside of therapy sessions.
